For 17 years, Local Vocals has given Gunnison Valley songwriters a place to share not only their music, but also the stories that inspired it.
The annual event returns Saturday, Aug. 8, from 7-10 p.m. at the Gunnison Arts Center’s Blue Box Theatre, bringing together local singer-songwriters for an evening of original music in an intimate listening environment.
Hosted and curated by Chris Coady, Local Vocals began in 2009 after a one-time Singer Songwriter Night at the arts center. Inspired by his experiences performing at songwriter festivals, Coady recognized the depth of musical talent in the Gunnison Valley and wanted to create an event dedicated to showcasing local artists and their original work.
This year’s lineup features Eliza Thorp, Bill Dowell, Bonnie Jeanne, Alden Burt and Coady. Each performer brings a unique musical style, but all share a passion for songwriting and storytelling.
Unlike an open mic or background entertainment at a restaurant, Local Vocals is designed to give audiences an opportunity to truly listen. Between songs, performers share the experiences and inspiration behind their music, creating a personal connection with listeners.
Coady said the event provides local musicians with a supportive space where they can feel encouraged to continue writing. He also enjoys introducing audiences to the Valley’s talented songwriters.
“There is power and beauty in a well written song,” Coady said. “A good song can reach right past all the barriers and speak to the heart.”
This year’s event is sponsored by Bluebird Bottle Shop, Ink River Design, The Paper Clip, Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan, Bluebird Real Estate and Marios.
Tickets are $20 for Gunnison Arts Center members and $25 for nonmembers. Learn more or purchase tickets at gunnisonartscenter.org/live-music.
