Editor:
Hello, I’m Alec Lindeman and I want to run for the House of Representatives for our fair district — House District 58.
I moved to the Gunnison Valley in the spring of 2009 to stay for a year. Once I arrived, I thrived. This place got into my bones. The plan changed to building a life here. I feel lucky to have a wonderful community of family and friends and a loving and supportive wife, Nel, your local seamstress. I currently serve this community as a councilor of the Mt. Crested Butte Town Council and I am genuinely moved by the prospect of getting to represent HD58 at the Statehouse. This valley has blessed me with the job of executive director of our community theater, set to enter its 55th year. Living here for 17 years has also saddled me with a healthy obsession for a good polka. Furthermore, volunteerism is an incredibly important aspect of my life here. I spend my time giving back to this community. I believe that doing so benefits me as much or more than those I am helping.
There are real issues in the Gunnison Country, just as there are in San Miguel, Ouray, Hinsdale, Dolores, Montrose, Delta, and Montezuma. Currently, we are reeling from long-term drought and surrounded by forest fires. Our public lands are seeing increasing traffic while the agencies tasked with managing them undergo restructuring and budget cuts. The cost of living is close to untenable for many and access to health care regularly means traveling several hours for expensive general care. I stand for a Colorado where hard work and helping others should provide somebody with a good life, not just a living.
I am eager to meet with you and learn more because I don’t pretend to know all of the issues that concern the people of HD58 or how they differ from place to place. That’s something that you deserve-somebody who wants to meet you face to face, who works hard to stay engaged with you, who understands your needs, and who lends a hand. Rolling up your sleeves and lending a hand is what it’s about in rural Colorado. I believe that through hard work and real human connection we can build a Western Slope that works as hard for you as I will.
Alec Lindeman
