The Gunnison High School boys basketball team fell to 1-16 on the season after dropping their two games last week.
They started the week off on Friday, Feb. 6, losing at Meeker 55-34. The Cowboys fell behind early, but slowly chipped away in the second quarter and into the third quarter. Ultimately the boys ran out of gas, said head coach Christian Aguilar. Meeker was able to capitalize and take advantage of the Cowboys’ mistakes and put the game away.
Max Peluso scored 15 points to lead the Cowboys in the game. Cooper Boardman scored nine of his own, Jorge Perez added six and Asher Woytek and Jake Ebbott each had two to round out the scoring.
The Cowboys were back in action on Saturday, Feb. 7, losing 70-34 to Roaring Fork 70-34 in Carbondale. The Rams are 15-2 and the No. 8 ranked team in all of 3A and they proved to be too much for the Cowboys on Saturday.
Once again Peluso led the Cowboys in scoring with 19 points in the contest. Woytek added eight, Boardman had four, Jesus Chona had two and Perez rounded out the scoring with one point.
The Cowboys have been without senior Landon Miller in their last four games.
“Max Peluso has just really put the team on his back,” said Aguilar. “He's also been a vocal leader for us, and that's really been key for us, especially when one of our senior leaders goes down.”
The Cowboys will finish the week with a home game against Telluride (7-9) on Saturday, Feb. 14.
