Gunnison swim team’s 2026 off to busy start

The Gunnison High School swim team has competed in two meets since the start of the new year.

They started off 2026 at the 39th Annual Girls Hornet Invitational in Pueblo on Saturday, Jan. 10. Head coach Tami Maciejko brought four swimmers to the meet to compete.

“[The] Pueblo Invite was attended by powerhouse schools like Cheyenne Mountain and Liberty High,” wrote Maciejko in an email to the Times. “Gunnison definitely put [on] a good showing even with a small team.”

Gracen Corey had a strong showing for the Cowboys, placing fifth overall out of 117 swimmers in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.37. She also placed seventh in the 100-yard freestyle, swimming a 59.45.

Kelsy Chodorowski placed 13th in both events that she swam. She swam a 2:14.17 in the 200-yard freestyle and a 1:14.63 in the 100-yard butterfly.

Elora Jones placed 14th in the 500-yard freestyle after swimming a 6:14.18. She also placed 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:22.46.

In her first meet, Dziekan Kinsley swam both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke. Kinsley swam a 44.06 in the 50-yard freestyle. Maciejko emphasized that Kinsley is improving with each swim.

The Cowboys traveled to Montrose on Friday, Jan. 16, to compete in the 2026 MHS Girls January Invite. Maciejko brought eight swimmers and had seven individual top five finishes.

Chodorowski placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a personal best time of 6:06.19, dropping 6.36. She also placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke, swimming a personal best 1:22.17.

Corey finished first in the 200-yard individual medley with a personal best time of 2:25.13, dropping 2.26. She placed second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:10.36.

Jones placed third in the 200-yard freestyle with a personal best time of 2:19.21, dropping 3.78 seconds. She also placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke, swimming a 1:12.56.

Audrey Meeuwsen placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with a personal best time of 28.04, dropping 0.30 seconds. She also swam a personal best time of 6:00.68 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Caris Stoerkel swam personal best times in both of her events. In the 50-yard freestyle she dropped 2.30 and swam a 41.00. In the 100-yard backstroke she dropped 3>40 and swam a 1:41.75.

Kinsley dropped over two seconds off her 50-yard freestyle, swimming a 41.00. She also swam a 1:50.00 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Jade Hannah swam two events as well. She swam a 1:01.02 in the 50-yard freestyle and a 2:30.17 in the 100-yard backstroke.

“The best part of the meet was watching the Jones, Meeuwsen, Corey and Chodoworski [relay] win the 400 free relay by more than five seconds,” wrote Maciejko.

The girls swam a 4:07.93 to take home first place in the last event of the meet.

The girls will be back in the pool this weekend with a meet in Gunnison on Friday, Jan. 23, and a meet in Frisco at Summit high school on Saturday, Jan. 24.
