The Gunnison High School girls basketball team improved to 7-12 last week, winning their only game of the week over in-valley rivals Crested Butte.
The girls were supposed to play two games, but their game against Telluride was rescheduled to later this week due to scheduling challenges on Telluride’s end.
Regardless, the Cowboys traveled to Crested Butte and beat the Titans 28-18 on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
The girls used an impressive defensive effort to stifle the Titans in the second half. Going into halftime, the Cowboys were up only three points, but they held Crested Butte scoreless in the third and to two points in the fourth.
Even with the impressive defensive effort, the game was close because the Cowboys struggled mightily on offense.
“We really, really struggled to get into any kind of offensive flow,” said head coach Chad Terry. “And we got pretty good shots for a lot of the game, but I bet we missed 20 pretty open layups down the stretch of that game.”
Ashlyn Cowan led the girls with 14 points in the contest. Brooke Terry scored seven, Autumn Terry added three and Althea Stansbery and Delaney Diamond each had two points to round out the scoring.
Terry said he knows that despite the win, the girls did not play to their potential and will look for some more offensive production as they close out the season.
The Cowboys have three games coming up later this week against teams with a combined record of 6-50. The first game will be on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Olathe (5-14). The second will be the rescheduled home game against Telluride (1-17) on Friday, Feb. 20. The final game will be at Aspen (0-19) on Saturday, Feb. 21.
Gunnison sits at 28th in the CHSAA 3A rankings, and with three straight wins the girls would give themselves a good chance to make regionals.
The Cowboys finish the regular season with a home game on Saturday, Feb. 28, against Roaring Fork (17-2).
