Gunnison fireworks demonstrated ‘thoughtful leadership’

Last week’s Independence Day celebration demonstrated the value of thoughtful leadership and professional judgment.

I want to thank Mayor Diego Plata, City Manager Amanda Wilson, Fire Chief Hugo Ferchau, the Gunnison Volunteer Fire Department, law enforcement, and the licensed fireworks professionals for relying on experience, planning, and sound judgment to safely celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday.

Wildfire risk is real, and no one should minimize it. But neither should we dismiss the expertise of those whose responsibility is to assess that risk. Too often, public discourse is driven by anxiety amplified through social media rather than by the people with the training and responsibility to make these decisions.

The celebration concluded safely and without incident—not because of luck, but because of careful planning, preparation, and professionalism.

Thank you to everyone who made it possible for Gunnison to celebrate both safely and proudly.
