At the September 22 meeting of the Gunnison City Council, a proclamation in recognition of the 125th anniversary of Western Colorado University was read. Mayor Diego Plata presented Shelly Thompson, Western Colorado University Vice President of Advancement, with a copy of the proclamation.
The proclamation (in part) decreed," WHEREAS, the City of Gunnison and Western Colorado University share a unique and mutually beneficial relationship rooted in the character of a resilient, outdoor mountain community, a connection that strengthens both institutions as they serve residents, students, families, and visitors, and inspires generations of alumni, faculty, staff, and community members to remain in Gunnison while contributing to local businesses, the municipality, and the University through their shared commitment to place and the public good; and
"WHEREAS, while Western Colorado University celebrates its 125th year, it honors its rich history and continues to advance new ideas, broaden educational opportunities, and inspire future leaders across Colorado and beyond; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GUNNISON COLORADO, THAT: The City of Gunnison hereby recognizes and celebrates Western Colorado University on the momentous occasion of its 125th anniversary, expressing gratitude for its historic contributions, acknowledging its integral role in shaping the Gunnison community, and affirming confidence in the bright future ahead."
Recently, the university announced robust fall enrollment figures with an overall increase of 10% with 4,019 students attending. The university also reported a 32% rise in the number of concurrent students taking Western classes at their high schools.
