The Gunnison High School boys basketball team had another tough week, going 0-2 and falling to 1-10 on the season.
“We’ve gone toe-to-toe against some of the best teams in the state of Colorado in the 3A classification,” wrote head coach Christian Aguilar in an email to the Times. “We’re capable of playing great basketball, and we just have to polish up our late game execution.”
The Cowboys fell to the Salida Spartans at home on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 58-49 to start the week. The Cowboys started off strong, but in the second half the shots stopped falling and the boys started to turn the ball over, which led to the Spartans pulling away.
Landon Miller led the Cowboys in scoring against Salida with 14 points. Asher Woytek had 10 points, Jorge Perez and Max Peluso each had seven points, Jake Ebbott had six, Bing O’Rourke and Jack Stone each had two and Ryder Vincent had one to round out the scoring for the Cowboys.
“We played fast, under control and were able to score before defense was even set,” wrote Aguilar. “[But] we started racking up turnovers and it’s incredibly difficult to win a basketball game when we don’t value possession.”
The Cowboys then hosted the Meeker Cowboys on Saturday, Jan. 17, losing 55-43. The Cowboys once again started strong, finishing the first half only down three points, but they were outscored 30-21 in the second half which proved to be the difference.
The Cowboys were led by Miller once again as he finished with 14 points for the second game in a row. Perez finished with nine, Ebbott with eight, Peluso with six and Woytek, Vincent and Stone each had two to round out the scoring for the Cowboys.
“This game had the feel of the Salida game, where the first half and second half were two completely different stories,” wrote Aguilar. “Again, the talent and capability is there, we just need to do it for all four quarters.”
The Cowboys have a matchup at North Fork (8-2), a team they’ve already seen this year, on Saturday, Jan. 24. The Miners defeated the Cowboys 48-38 earlier in the year on Gunnison’s home court.
“They have great guards,” wrote Aguilar “We have to make it difficult for them. They like to penetrate and we have to be able to make them uncomfortable.”
