Last weekend, the GHS girls golf team traveled to Alamosa and played in their final regular season tournament at Cattails Golf Course. They brought home success — Riley Murphy took first place at the tournament and the team earned second overall.
“The girls took more steps in the right direction,” said Head Coach Kevin Mickelson.
As a team the Cowboys finished out with a total of 317 for the day, coming in right behind Alamosa who, playing at home, finished with 315. They beat Salida, who came in third, and finished with 348.
Murphy, with the top score of the whole tournament, shot a 91, a full nine strokes better than the runner up, Morgan Ortega from Alamosa, who shot a 100.
“Riley rose to the occasion and won the tournament,” Mickelson said. “We are very proud of her.”
Allie Schwartz and Blue Noble tied for second best of the Cowboys, each shooting a 113 for the day. Sam Brown was right behind them with a 117.
As is often the case with Western Slope golf action, Mickelson says the weather played a role.
“The weather was not ideal,” he said. “But they found a way to grind out decent scores on a course that was playing very fast.”
On Monday and Tuesday, they played at the same course in Alamosa for the regional tournament, but results were not available by press time.
“Hopefully we can take some of the momentum of moving in the right direction with us,” Mickelson said ahead of the second tournament.
The two Alamosa tournaments signal the winding down of the golf season for GHS. For those who qualify for state during the regional tournament, the season will extend one week longer — to next Monday, May 30, the details of which have yet to be released.
