The Gunnison High School girls wrestling team competed at the 2026 Ladies Canon Classic in Canon City on Friday, Jan. 30.
“We got a lot of good matches,” said head coach Mike Dawson after the tournament. “And overall, we're building to get better for state and regionals in two weeks.”
The girls had two placers at the tournament. Roxie Uhrig was a champion at 145 pounds and won most outstanding wrestler at the tournament.
Roxie Uhrig wrestled in five matches at the tournament and pinned all five of her opponents on the way to her first-place finish. In the first round she pinned her opponent after 50 seconds, in the second round she pinned her opponent after 1:01, in the quarterfinals she pinned her opponent after 1:28, in the semifinals she pinned her opponent after 1:27 and in the first-place match she pinned her opponent after 47 seconds. Roxie Uhrig’s record is now up to 28-2 on the season after going 5-0 in Canon City.
Freshman McKayla Singer was the only other placer for the Cowboys. She placed sixth while wrestling at 135 pounds. Singer pinned her first opponent after 1:43 in the first round and pinned her second opponent after 1:48 in the second round, but was pinned after 3:48 in the quarterfinals. Singer came back and won by a 13-7 decision in the third round of the consolations bracket, but lost in the fourth round of the consolation bracket after being pinned in 1:12. Singer also lost in the fifth-place match by a 7-2 decision and took home sixth place. Singer now has a 10-6 record on the season for the Cowboys.
At 155 pounds, Romie Uhrig went 4-1 at the tournament, but did not place due to the way the brackets were set up. She won her first match, pinning her opponent in 30 seconds, but due to a seeding issue had to face a top-ranked 5A wrestler in the second round. She lost by an 8-3 decision, which Dawson said was the closest match that girl had all day. Romie Uhrig was then sent down to the consolation bracket with no opportunity to wrestle out of it.
Romie Uhrig placed first in the consolation bracket. She received a bye in the consolation second round, then pinned her next two opponents, the first after 2:54 and the second after 2:29. In the first-place match in the consolation bracket she won by a 15-0 technical fall. After going 4-1 on the weekend, Romie Uhrig now has a 28-5 record on the season.
“It was really just a... It was a snafu, and, you know, she still had a great day, wrestled really good against the 5A girl,” said Dawson about Romie Uhrig. “We just wish that would have been the finals match.”
Tea Waggoner was the final Cowboy to wrestle at the tournament. Waggoner wrestled at 130 pounds and did not place, but still went 4-2. She pinned her first opponent after 2:53, but was pinned in her next match after 58 seconds and was sent down to the consolation bracket like Romie Uhrig. Waggoner proceeded to win her next three matches to make it to the first-place match of the consolation bracket. She won her third match by fall after 21 seconds, her fourth match by fall after 53 seconds and her fifth match by fall after 4:15. Waggoner lost in the consolation finals by a 15-0 technical fall. She still improved her record to 26-7 on the year.
The girls have one final weekend before the regional and state tournaments. This Thursday, Feb. 5, they will host the Salida Spartans for a dual, but because Salida’s team is so small they will likely only be able to wrestle one match. Then the girls will head to the 2026 Lady Panther Invitational in Walsenburg on Friday, Feb. 6. On Saturday, Feb. 7, the girls, along with the boys team, will help run Gunninson’s home junior varsity tournament as well.
With under two weeks left before the biggest tournaments of the year, the girls will be working on mental preparation for their big matches coming up. Dawson emphasized that the tournament in Walsenburg is a great opportunity to tune up some minor things and correct anything else that needs to be addressed before regionals and states.
