For generations, snow has been more than a backdrop to winter in the Gunnison Valley. For Crested Butte Snowsports Foundation, it is an opportunity to build confidence, connection, health and memories for local youth.
The nonprofit, which opened in 1978 and carries forward a mission rooted in Crested Butte’s snowsports history dating to the 1920s, is accepting scholarship applications for the 2026-27 winter season. Applications are available at cbsnowsports.org/impact.
CBSF’s goal is simple: Give every Gunnison Valley youth the opportunity to experience the joy of snowsports, regardless of financial circumstances or ability.
Through full and partial scholarships, the foundation helps families access programming, equipment and other opportunities to get kids on snow.
“We all know, in the long Gunnison Valley winters, how much of our mental and physical health is attributed to snowsports,” said Katie Lewinger, executive director. “We want to get kids involved that never thought they’d try, or that their parents are yet to learn how to ski or snowboard.”
The foundation creates pathways for first-time participants, recreational skiers and riders, and aspiring athletes, while emphasizing community and personal growth. Its values include access, community, opportunity, growth, stewardship and inclusion.
CBSF will announce scholarship recipients in mid-October.
Other upcoming events include the 2027 CBSF Gear Swap Nov. 6-7, ROMP Ski’s Chicken & Waffles Season Kickoff Party in November and the 2027 Freezin’ for a Reason fundraiser, where local celebrities can take a chilly dunk or raise enough money to save themselves and help get kids on snow.
CBSF is grateful to Arrowhead Mountain Lodge for donating this month’s Business Spotlight and sharing the foundation’s mission.
