Gunnison High School Cowboys boys and girls wrestling teams each had strong showings at this year’s opening tournament, the Wolverine Classic. The boys team took first place overall and every wrestler on the girls team took first in their bracket.
After a scoring mixup the boys team had already hit the road and were 45 minutes outside Bayfield, Colo. by the time the tournament director let them know that they had won the tournament as a team.
Three Cowboy wrestlers took first place in their brackets. Julian Patrick, who wrestled at 132 pounds, won his first final two matches by decision after pinning his first three opponents, scoring 14 points for the Cowboys.
Zayne Benson took first place in his bracket wrestling at 106 pounds. He pinned his first three opponents as well, then won his fourth match by a technical fall and his final match by a 15-8 decision, scoring 14 points for the Cowboys. Zach Benson took first in the 144-pound weight class, pinning his first three opponents, winning his fourth match via a technical fall and his final match by a 15-1 major decision. He also scored 14 points for the Cowboys.
Bentley Patrick took third in the 126-pound weight class, Braedyn Anderson took fourth in the 113-pound weight class, Cody Casebolt took third in the 138-pound weight class, Nolan Witzel took third in the 120-pound weight class, Owen Smejkal took second in the 190-pound weight class and Gavin Smejikal took eighth in the 215-pound weight class.
The Cowboys in total scored 127 points as a team to take first place in the tournament. Their 127 points was 22 more than the second-place finishers.
“It was the kids’ first chance to go out and compete,” said coach Michael Seijo. “We may not have a full team, but the kids we’ve got are quality wrestlers.”
The girls also had a strong performance at the Wolverine Classic. All three wrestlers took first place in their brackets.
In the 135-pound weight class Tea Waggoner took first place after pinning four straight opponents. Wrestling at 145 pounds, Roxie Uhrig took first after pinning five straight opponents. And in the 155-pound weight class Romie Uhrig took first, winning by a 7-0 decision in round one, pinning her next two opponents to take first place.
The Cowboys have an upcoming tournament this Friday, Dec. 12 (boys) and Saturday, Dec. 13 (boys and girls) in Montrose. This will be one of the Cowboys’ biggest tournaments of the year as they will be competing against 2A, 3A and 4A schools.
