Cowboys softball team sweeps doubleheader against Aspen

Posted

The Gunnison High School softball team swept a double-header against Aspen last week and dropped a game against Cedaredge. They now sit at 5-5 on the season.

The Cowboys beat the Skiers earlier this season at a tournament and hosted them again last week for a double-header at home on Friday, Sept. 4. They won the first game 21-6 and the second game 14-2.

In the first game the girls scored 10 runs in the first inning and 11 in the second. The game was over after the Skiers failed to close the margin in the third inning.

Susan Espinoza, Reese Japuntich and McKayla Singer all had multi-hit games and the three of them combined for six total RBIs. Josie Vollendorf finished the game with one hit, but drove in four runs while scoring two herself. Lyra Mason also recorded a hit, three runs and an RBI.

Japuntich gave up six runs (four earned) on six hits in three innings, striking out five and walking none.

In the second game of the double-header, the Cowboys once again started the game off with 10 runs in the first, then added two in the second and two in the third. Japuntich held the Skiers to just two runs across four innings in her second start of the day.

She gave up two runs on five hits and struck out three in four innings of work.

The girls finished with seven hits. Eisley Duke and Singer each had multi-hit games, each scored two runs and each had one RBI. Vollendorf, Japuntich and Brynn Romero each had a hit apiece as well. Lauren Cowan had two RBIs and scored two runs.

“The girls were patient at the plate,” wrote head coach Leslie diLorenzo in an email to the Times. “They didn't swing at pitches that weren't theirs.”

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the girls played an away game against Cedaredge and lost 14-2 in four innings.

The Cowboys struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning, but immediately gave up 11 runs in the bottom of the first. The Bruins went on to score two in the third and one more in the fourth while the Cowboys were shut out the rest of the game.

“Yesterday against Cedaredge, they had good at-bats, but they hit it at players in the field,” wrote diLorenzo. “Reese Japuntich pitched a really good game, but they hit the ball to areas.”

Up next the Cowboys will host Alamosa (4-4) and Rocky Ford (6-4) on Friday, Sept. 11, and Florence (4-3) on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Ahead of the slew of games, diLorenzo emphasized that the girls are still working on playing with confidence and not playing scared.
