The Gunnison High School girls wrestling team competed in the 2026 Girls Skyview Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 17, placing eighth overall and sending three girls to the finals.
“This was a tougher tournament,” said head coach Mike Dawson. “The freshmen showed through and placed again. Romie (Uhrig) had a tougher finals match, which she ended up losing, but it was still a good day and good competition.”
Wrestling at 145 pounds, Roxie Uhrig placed first and scored 26 points for the Cowboys. Roxie received a bye in the first round, then proceeded to pin all three of her opponents. She pinned her first opponent after 2:19 in the quarterfinal, her second opponent after 1:32 in the semifinal and her third opponent after 2:45 in the first place match. After going 3-0 at the tournament, Roxie’s season record improved to 23-2.
Roxie’s win in the finals was her 100th win as a high school wrestler. Roxie is now the second Gunnison Cowboy to reach 100 wins this season.
Romie Uhrig wrestled at 155 pounds and placed second, scoring 20 points for the Cowboys. Like her sister, Romie received a bye in the first round. She then proceeded to pin her first two opponents, the first after 28 seconds and the second after 1:27. In the finals she ran into an undefeated wrestler from Brighton that pinned her after 1:17 seconds. Romie moved to 23-4 on the season with the 2-1 weekend.
McKayla Singer placed second while wrestling at 135 pounds, scoring 18 points for the Cowboys. Singer received a first-round bye, then won her first match via a 10-4 decision to reach the semifinals. She pinned her opponent in the semifinals after 53 seconds to reach the first place match, but lost after being pinned in 1:41 and took second place. Singer is 7-3 on the season now and has finished no worse than second in her first three high school tournaments.
“She’s wrestling tough, she has a great attitude, and, you know, she learns every match,” said Dawson about Singer’s start to the season. “She had a good tournament run this week, last weekend, and we’ll just continue to build until we get to regionals.”
Wrestling at 130 pounds, Tea Waggoner placed third and scored 19 points for the Cowboys. Waggoner, the only Gunnison wrestler to not receive a bye in the first round, won her first match by pinning her opponent after 2:28. She then pinned her second opponent after 4:30, but lost in the semifinals. Waggoner bounced back, winning her next two matches, the first after a 46-second fall and the second after a 13-4 major decision, to take third place. Waggoner improved her record to 22-5 for the season.
The girls will travel to Durango for a duel this Saturday, Jan. 24. Each girl will get one match as they look to recuperate before the final push towards regionals and state.
