The Gunnison High School track and field team competed in the Colorado 3A Track and Field Championships in Lakewood last weekend.

The meet was held at Jefferson County Stadium with events starting on Thursday, May 14, and ending on Saturday, May 16.

The Cowboys brought nine athletes to the meet to compete in 10 different events.

Head coach Stacey Mickelson noted that Autumn Terry’s performances in the girls’ 100-meter and 200-meter dash were one of the highlights of the meet. She made the finals in each event and finished with a personal best in each race.

The girls 4x100-meter relay team of Carloine Sudderth, Maya Petrie, Aubrey Welfelt and Terry ran a personal best time at the meet and finished one spot out of making finals in the event.

Ian Baker’s performances in the boys’ 800-meter run and 1600-meter run were highlights, noted Mickelson.

Baker kicked things off for the boys, running a 1:58.42 in the 800-meter run and placed sixth.

He also placed 10th in the boys 1600-meter run with a time of 4:29.11.

Terry placed eighth in the girls 100-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 12.58 seconds and then placed eighth in the finals with a time of 12.74 seconds.

Terry also placed ninth in the girls 200-meter dash with a time of 25.71 seconds and placed sixth in the finals with a time of 25.78 seconds.

Jordan Callahan placed 13th in the girls 3200-meter run with a time of 12:33.32.

Sudderth placed 12th in the girls 100-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 16.71 seconds and did not make the finals.

Sudderth also placed 17th in the girls 300-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 50.47 seconds and did not make finals.

The girls 4x100-meter relay team placed 10th in the preliminaries with a time of 51.13 second and just missed the finals by one spot.

The girls 4x800-meter relay team of Gianna Wickenhauser, Avery Crean, Elora Jones and Callahan placed 15th in the preliminaries with a time of 10:35.05.

Welfelt placed 17th in the girls triple jump with a jump of 32-5.5 to round things out.

The Gunnison girls placed 25th out of 31 teams with six points and the boys placed 35th out of 39 teams with four points.

“I thought this season all the kids did a great job,” wrote Mickelson in an email to the Times. “Everyone was getting better every week. We were a pretty young team this year, so I thought they did a great job competing at the varsity level.”

Mickelson also emphasized how important the seniors were to this year’s team and that they’ll all be missed. Welfelt and Sudderth stepped up on the girls side and Baker stepped up on the boys side, noted Mickelson.

Despite losing a great group of seniors, Mickelson is excited for the future of the program.

“We have a good group of Juniors that I think will step into that leadership role for next year,” wrote Mickelson. “I am excited about all of the underclassmen that we have [as well]. We had a ton of freshmen and sophomores and I look forward to having all of them back next year.”
