Cowboys fall to Cedaredge, Olathe

The Gunnison High School boys basketball team started off the new year slow, losing their first two games to move to 1-8 on the season.

“We dropped the last two games on Friday and Saturday, and there’s a few things that we still need to fix as far as moving forward, but the guys are excited,” said head coach Christian Aguilar. “We’re psyched to be back, and we understand that it’s going to be this big stretch, this long stretch from here until really the last game of our regular season.”

The Cowboys opened the new year at Cedaredge, losing 77-57 on Friday, Jan. 9. Gunnison started the game off hot, taking a lead after the first quarter. But the Bruins took control after the first quarter and proceeded to win the next three quarters on their way to a 20-point win.

Aguilar said that Cedaredge did a good job of rebounding and causing discomfort by pressuring the Cowboys’ guards. Aguilar said he liked the intensity that his team came out with, but they need to find a way to play like that for all four quarters.

The Cowboys then hosted the Olathe Pirates on Saturday, Jan. 10, losing 64-37.

“We definitely have to hit our free throws for sure, and we have to continue to value the basketball because when you can’t get a quality possession as far as a shot or run offensive sets, you really can’t make any magic happen on the offensive end when you turn the ball over,” Aguilar said regarding the result of the Olathe game.

The Cowboys now have two big games coming up as they look to get their first win of the new year. They host the Salida Spartans (1-6) on Tuesday, Jan. 13, with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. Then, on Saturday, Jan. 17, they host the Meeker Cowboys (4-3) with tip off set for 2:00 p.m.

“We understand how imperative it is to just start strong, but also keep that consistency and keep your foot on the gas pedal, and we just have to carry whatever we carry from the opening tip-off all the way to when the buzzer goes off,” Aguilar said about the upcoming games.
