The Gunnison High School cross-country team competed at the 33rd Joe I. Vigil Open, its fourth meet of the year, in Alamosa on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The boys team placed 15th overall out of 37 teams and the girls team placed 11th overall out of 30 teams.

“The kids did amazing,” head coach Blake Davis said. “I think there's personal records across the board. I think it was four or five teams in our region, and we only lost one. So it [was] a great litmus test for where we're at.”

The boys team was led by Ari Eberly, who finished 47th with a time of 17:21.30, and Brandon Hallock, who placed 59th with a time of 17:31.90. Davis highlighted both Eberly and Hallock after the race as athletes who stuck out Saturday.

Ian Baker placed 84th with a time of 17:51.90, Jesus Chona placed 132nd with a time of 18:33.40, Riego Koepsel placed 163rd with a time of 19:00.80, Houston Stair placed 204th with a time of 19:41.40, Jack Siegrist placed 247th with a time of 22:42.50, Roman Loken placed 251st with a time of 20:40.40 and Casen Foltz placed 415th with a time of 26:02.20.

Davis also highlighted Elora Jones and Brooke Terry on the girls side.

“It's a big race, and they didn't look scared. They looked confident going throughout the race on the starting line, and they were moving up as the race went on,” Davis said. “And they did a great job listening to race instructions, and they executed it really well.”

Jones was the girls’ top finisher, placing 25th with a time of 20:08.60, and Terry finished 85th with a time of 21:54.00. Right behind Terry was Bristol Buffington, who placed 90th with a time of 21:56.90.

Lucy Orgill placed 117th with a time of 22:26.30, Avery Crean placed 130th with a time of 22:43.00, Sophie Nold placed 157th with a time of 23:29.30, Autumn Terry placed 195th with a time of 24:34.00, Kinley Dziekan placed 205th with a time of 24:57.70, Caris Storkel placed 209th with a time of 25:06.90, Mila Jorgenson-Clair placed 216th with a time of 25:17.70, Sofia Rascon placed 257th with a time of 26:46.30, Kendall Clark placed 315th with a time of 29:47.80 and Arianna De Marco placed 334th with a time of 32:25.10.

Up next, the team will race at its home meet, which is hosted at Western Colorado University. The 17th Annual Mountaineer Cowboy Cross Country Meet will take place Saturday, Sept. 19.

“Being able to show all their hard work to the community is, I think, really motivating for them this week,” Davis said.
