The Gunnison High School boys wrestling team wrestled Montrose in a dual on Saturday, Jan. 24, losing 49-12.
“I don’t think our preparation was very good this week, and I kind of take the blame for that,” said head coach Michael Seijo. “[We] took it a little too easy and it’s one of those weeks where we didn’t have a lot going on, so maybe we lost focus in our preparation.”
The Cowboys were supposed to be competing against both Montrose and Durango, but due to inclement weather Durango was not able to make the trip.
The boys won only one out of the five matches they wrestled in. Montrose also won five matches due to the Cowboys being unable to fill the weight classes.
At 106 pounds, Zayne Benson was pinned after 1:35. Braedyn Anderson won by forfeit wrestling at 113 pounds. Bentley Patrick lost by a 10-1 major decision while wrestling at 126 pounds. At 132 pounds, Cody Casebolt lost by a 5-4 decision. Julian Patrick was pinned after 5:09 while wrestling at 138 pounds.
Zach Benson pinned his opponent after 2:08 while wrestling at 144 pounds, making him the only Cowboy to win a match on Saturday.
The Cowboys couldn’t fill the 165, 175, 190, 215 and 285 pound weight classes, forfeiting those five matches.
“I’m not super upset about the whole thing, but it’s just one of those things where I thought we could have done a little bit better,” said Seijo. “It’s high school sports, so sometimes we don’t go out there and wrestle the way that we’re supposed to. As long as we can take those losses and learn from them, then that’s a good thing.”
The Gunnison High School girls wrestling team was supposed to have a dual against Durango this past weekend, but they were unable to make it because of the weather.
This week the boys and girls each have a dual at North Fork on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Then both teams will head to Cañon City for a tournament over the weekend. The girls will be competing on Friday, Jan. 30. The boys will be competing on Saturday, Jan. 31.
The boys and girls will be preparing with high paced practices throughout the week, said Seijo. Heading into the final stretch of the season, Seijo emphasized that the boys need to be confident in their positions and how to get to them when they wrestle.
