Calm nerves will be key for the Gunnison boys golf team.
Not just in their play as hosts of the 16-team Gunnison Invitational at Dos Rios Golf Club on Sept. 9, but throughout the entirety of the fall season. The Cowboys battled at the Vail Golf Club on Aug. 2, but still struggled to break 90.
The ability to tweak a swing mechanic or thought during a round is something of which the Cowboys are still in search. It’s not an exact science either. It’s a delicate balancing act which amateur golfers are always seeking.
“Our big point of emphasis right now is we have to get better at adjusting throughout the round,” said head coach Kevin Mickelson. “Whether it’s the conditions, the course or the layout. Sometimes it’s your own swing you need to adjust to. All of us are amateur golfers and our guys are just learning how to make those adjustments.”
The Cowboys have hosted the Gunnison Invitational since 1991, and Dos Rios is a course they know well — which can be a benefit and a barrier to success. While the challenging layout at Vail took its toll, Mickelson said GHS had to play to its strengths on its home track.
“When it’s your home course and tournament, guys will get amped up,” Mickelson said. “These guys have to focus on the things they can do and not let the ‘can’ts’ get in the way. They have to slow their brains down and find a rhythm on the course.”
In the hunt to get as many golfers as much experience as possible, 16 golfers traveled to Grand Junction for a dual meet with Palisade. It wasn’t a varsity meet, so the teams played a two-man scramble. For Mickelson, it’s all about getting game reps in for an inexperienced roster. GHS also has similar duels scheduled with Salida and Buena Vista.
Only three meets remain before the Class 2A state tournament on Oct. 6 and 7 at Elmwood Golf Course in Pueblo.
