Cowboy football falls to Delta

The GHS football team lost 47-7 at Delta on Sept. 5. The Cowboys couldn’t get out of the starting gate against the Panthers, who GHS coach Chase Starman said, “popped them in the mouth,” right away.

Ahead of practice this week, Starman said the Cowboys will need to tighten up their approach.

“The team we saw against Eagle Valley in week one wasn’t the same team we saw against Delta,” Starman said. “We take the ball at the start of each game. We work hard to teach desire and aggression. But we have to keep grinding. We haven’t had our ‘ah-ha’ moment where we get the first shot in, where we fire off the ball first.”

Getting to the ball hasn’t been a problem for senior running back and linebacker Cody Casebolt. When Starman reviewed the Delta game film Saturday morning, Casebolt’s activity stood out.

“Cody was all over the place,” Starman said. “I watched a lot of film Saturday and in the first quarter he’d already notched six tackles and a bunch of assists. He was just flying around on both sides of the ball.”

Casebolt said he prides himself in doing the little things right and making the most of each opportunity to make a play.

“I think about it like this, I don’t want to disappoint myself later on, so I just give it my all at that moment,” Casebolt said. “Also, when one person is doing their job as hard as they can, I think it motivates everyone.”

Even though GHS has been outscored 75-14 after two games, Casebolt said it won’t take much to get things rolling for the Cowboys.

“We need to create more of a winning environment,” Casebolt said. “With every little win, we have to be excited about it and celebrate it. A win at Meeker would start it for us. It would spark us. Last year, we got a big game win against Pagosa Springs and kept the momentum rolling with two wins after that. A good game against Meeker would get us rolling for the rest of the year.”
