It took extra innings to decide a winner on Tuesday in what was an exciting game from start to finish. The Gunnison High School (GHS) softball team battled and came away with the 12-11 victory over Delta, as a passed ball on a ball four pitch —with runners on second and third base — gave the Cowboys the break they needed, resulting in Savannah Schmalz flying down the third base line and beating the throw to the pate.

Mountaineers come together for golf tournament

The 5th Annual Bill Noxon Memorial Golf Classic might have been postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic precautions. However that didn’t derail a thing as 29 teams — filled with alumni and family members — took to the course on Saturday for what was a perfect day to golf in Gunnison. Coming in first place with a total gross score of 54 was Alex Anderson, Chris Anderson, Charlie Oskarson and Rick Hayes. Team McMurren — comprised of Autumn Lund, Pyper McMurren, Jason McMurren and Zach McMurren — also took first place with a net score of 41. Closest to the Pin (hole 2, 7, 12 and 15), went to Terry Morgan, Crystal Lombrokos, Josh Pierce and Nick Spallone. Longest drive for the men was Derrek Damien (hole 9), while longest drive for the women was Lombrokos (hole 14). The event was originally scheduled for May 16 before being postponed to Aug. 22.

Cowboys fall to Mean Moose, defeat Florence

A late rally by the Gunnison High School (GHS) softball team in the bottom of the seventh got the Cowboys back in the game, however it wasn’t enough as GHS fell 17-12 to Alamosa. Melita Ferchau led the way driving in four runs, three of which came on a three-run-home-run that helped spark an eight run inning in the bottom of the seventh. Britt Propernick was right behind Ferchau in driving in runs with three of her own. Prior to falling to Alamosa, the Cowboys defeated Florence 19-1 on Wednesday, picking up their first win of the season. GHS will be back on the diamond Saturday. They host Basalt high school in a double header starting at 12 p.m.
