New owner commits to working with local, state groups
Following the recent acquisition of mine properties at Mt. Emmons above Crested Butte by a subsidiary of mining giant Freeport-McMoRan, officials with local and state agencies this week unveiled a draft agreement that could drastically change in coming years what has been a thorn in the side of the community for nearly four decades. Numerous groups — including parties to the pact, mine opponents and lawmakers — are hailing the monumental agreement for providing a foundation for a partnership between the mining company, the Crested Butte community and government agencies that would, first and foremost, ensure water quality.
