The Gunnison High School girls’ varsity basketball team continues to fight despite their overall record falling to 0-7. In the past week, the Cowboys fell to a very talented Delta squad on the road (70-11) and Monte Vista (54-38) and Hotchkiss (75-34) at home. The team travels to Olathe on Friday and hosts Roaring Fork Saturday afternoon.
The Gunnison High School (GHS) wrestling team took down two more opponents, as they continue to show the 3A division they are no team to be taken lightly. On Saturday, the Cowboys traveled to Rifle to compete in the Rifle triangular dual, where they defeated Rifle (42-35) and Battle Mountain (63-18) — improving their overall record to 9-1.
It was a slow start to the game for the Crested Butte High School (CBHS) hockey team on Friday, as they took on the Summit Tigers on the road. The Tigers raced out to an early 2-0 lead, before CBHS scored their first goal of the game midway through the first period, thanks to Rowan Piccaro, who slipped the puck past the goalkeeper.
The Gunnison High School (GHS) swim team had an impressive outing at the Demon meet in Glenwood Springs, recording multiple top three individual and relay team finishes. As a whole GHS finished fourth on day one — against Delta, Aspen and Glenwood Springs — and also came in fourth on day two, competing against Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Summit and Moffat County.
Head Coach Lora Westling knew getting through the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference was going to be no easy task for her Western Colorado University women’s basketball team. She was right.
Sunny skies and no school on Monday brought kids in droves to Cranor Hill Ski Area northeast of the city for the annual Oh Be Joyful Ski Meet. Youngsters competed in modified slalom, downhill, distance jumping and freestyle jumping events. Skiing was free all day to participants.

The seventh-ranked Western women’s basketball team saw its 11-point halftime lead disappear in the third quarter against Colorado Mesa and found itself down 51-48 with under two minutes remaining in the fourth.

Another season is coming to an end and this will be one the Gunnison Middle School (GMS) boys 8A and 8B basketball teams will always remember. “I am most proud of the fact that our teams have played at home and on the road with masks on, good sportsmanship, and have competed hard in every minute of every game said 8A head coach and GMS principal Andy Hanks.
