This year marks the 21st that Erica Young has been in the classroom, teaching nearly every grade from kindergarten to 12th. For many of those years, the teaching didn’t stop after the final bell.

She’s regularly tutored students four to five days a week after school. She started having to turn students away due to lack of time.

“It became clear to me that there are many students in our community, ranging from pre-K through high school, who were looking for extra support,” the longtime Crested Butte Community School teacher said. “Some students need help meeting grade-level expectations and some students want to excel and get that A+ in AP calculus.”

To try to meet this demand, Young started Elevated Learning Tutors in January of last year. With the assistance of business partner, Kara Miller, Elevated Learning pairs educators from across the valley with students either online or in person at one of the two learning centers, including at 242 N. Main St. in Gunnison.

Young said she is thankful for the “amazing education” her own children are receiving in local public schools, but that when a need arises for extra support it “works out better when it doesn’t come from `Mom.”

“Both of my children have benefitted from the expertise of the fantastic tutors working with Elevated Learning,” she explained. “Our mission is to empower all students to reach their potential!’
