Here’s a shocker: Passion for wildlife runs deep in the Gunnison Basin. Look no further than the attendance at countless meetings over the past few years at which scores of residents have turned out to inform themselves on the latest wildlife-related topic or offer an opinion.

Monday’s big-game meeting at Western Colorado University was no different. About 80 attendees ranging from diehard hunters to wildlife watchers turned out — and with good reason, given the interest generated on the health of herds with waist-deep snow still a stone’s throw from many roadways.

Historically, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) invited the public each year in late March to talk about big-game hunting license recommendations for the coming fall. The agency’s hard-working biologists went to the trouble of printing comprehensive reports on past years’ tag allocations compared to what they’d like to see in the months ahead.
