Dedicated funding streams designed to address unintended impacts from tourism in resort communities have long been sought — but largely without success.
A property tax measure last month aimed at providing revenue for affordable housing projects fell flat, as did an effort spearheaded by Gunnison County Commissioners to reform a state-sanctioned lodging tax by broadening its allowed use.
Yet, creative funding solutions still exist. One only has to look at the state of Alaska to find an outside-the-box approach to taxation in the form of a seasonal sales tax. Colorado statute does not allow for a seasonal sales tax.
