Western students compare caffeine content from local shops

It’s been a rough night, and the only thing that matters is getting a strong jolt of energy to start the day. But where in Gunnison can you get the most caffeine out of your cup o’ joe?

According to a study produced by the chemistry department at Western Colorado University, the answer is the espresso at Mocha’s Coffeehouse — at least based on concentration of caffeine. Next in line is Double Shot Cyclery, followed by Tributary Coffee Roasters, Gunnison Coffee Company and finally Starbucks.

However, some shops serve coffee in greater volume upon an order, so the results are not so cut and dried.

Caffeine is a stimulant, and while it is safe at low levels, it is poisonous at high levels, according to chemistry professor Jarral Ryter. For someone who weighs about 150 pounds, he said, consuming 10-15 grams of caffeine could result in fatality — but that is far more than one could drink in normal coffee.
