Marijuana sales continue to soar in the City of Gunnison, and local government is receiving a tax windfall as a result — a large chunk of which is not being utilized.
For the first 10 months of last year (the most recent sales tax data available), the city collected about $145,000 in pot tax revenue. But that’s just in receipts from the city’s 4 percent sales tax that applies to most products.
It doesn’t count the additional, 5 percent special sales tax tacked on to pot sales. Collections from the special tax alone amounted to nearly $177,000 through the end of October.
