Valuation, new mill contribute to increase

When downtown Gunnison business owner Chris Osness received his tax bill last week, he handed it to an employee to open. Based on the valuation of his building determined last summer, he knew his tax bill likely increased from the following year.

Indeed, it did. Osness said his increase was more than 40 percent, from $8,600 to $12,500.

“When I got my valuation last year, I nearly had a heart attack,” Osness said. “It’s not going to kill us, but I’m really watching my other expenses.”
