Revenue would fund equipment, offset rising costs

Gunnison Regional Communications Center is seeking to double its surcharge revenue next year to pay for rising costs, decreasing revenue and improved equipment.

The agency has submitted an application to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission to increase its 911 surcharge from $1 per phone line per month to $2. It is hoped that approval will be granted by April 1, generating an additional $200,000 annually.

City of Gunnison Finance Director Ben Cowan, who submitted the paperwork on behalf of the communications center board, said the reasons for the requested increase are many.
