At least once. Every year. Like clockwork.
I came to the realization some years back that there’s an unfortunate regularity to avalanche deaths impacting the Gunnison Valley. Some of these accidents claimed the lives of locals. Some former residents or Western alums. Others were visitors to the valley who succumbed to slides while here.
But as a newspaper man typically tasked with reporting such tragedies — and a backcountry skier and snowmobiler myself, concerned about the well-being of others within that community — the pattern is impossible to ignore.
