Local resident Brieonna Aljets and her husband own a tiny home which was once located in Irwin. While it wasn’t their main dwelling, they were forced to move the structure because it did not meet Gunnison County requirements for septic hookup.
While the home was self-contained in addressing gray water, ultimately the couple moved the dwelling to another county.
Aljets believes tiny homes offer an effective solution to the Gunnison Valley’s housing problems, but her experience highlights the often difficult to reconcile objectives of affordability and ensuring public health and safety posed by the small structures.
