Property tax collections still planned to increase next year

Gunnison Watershed RE1J School Board has approved a decrease in the district’s mill levy to compensate for higher valuations. The move, approved Friday, follows a trend of a declining mill levy experienced over the last five years.

The district’s 28.868 mill levy for tax year 2019 is 2.293 less than what was set in 2018 to be assessed this year. Despite the decrease in the mill levy, RE1J expects to collect nearly $19 million next year, compared to $16.5 million this year.

However, a portion of the total mills collected is a static 15.5 mills set by the state. And any additional revenue collected as a result of increased valuation is offset by a reduction in state funding.
