We’ll be the first to agree that high school sports encourage a healthy lifestyle, promote discipline and offer a constructive outlet for kids. That’s why we were intrigued to hear that a committee has formed to propose the addition of a boys soccer program at Gunnison High School (GHS).

Participation in the sport among high school students is certainly growing across the state. And we see value in the committee’s position that the program would encourage students from diverse backgrounds to participate in sports.

On Monday, the committee took its argument before Gunnison Watershed RE1J School Board. Dozens of impassioned parents and players filled the room in support of a team sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) at GHS — beginning with a junior varsity program in fall 2020 and followed by the addition of a varsity team in 2021.
