Phyllis Elizabeth (Langston) Metz was born on April 8, 1927 in Fort Collins, Colo., to Archie and Neva (Slonecker) Langston. A second generation Colorado native, born to a Larimer County pioneer family, she passed away on Sunday, Feb. 24.
Phyllis grew up in the Poudre Canyon area, most of that being at Indian Meadows. After graduating high school from Cache La Poudre High School the family moved to Bellvue, Colo.
While working as an operator for the phone company she met her husband Layton and after a short courtship they were married on Nov. 9, 1946. They spent a wonderful 46 years together before his death in 1992.
As an only child, Phyllis always wanted a large family. Through the birth of her own four children or "adopting" others, she fulfilled that wish. Phyllis enjoyed her family and loved spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Holiday dinners and sporadic weekend BBQs were normal for the Metz family home. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling with her family and friends. She touched many lives.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Neva Langston, husband, Layton Metz Sr., sons, Layton (Butch) Metz, Jr. and Loyd Metz and granddaughter, Laurie Leflet.
She is survived by her son, Lex (Pat) Metz of Loveland, Colo., daughter, Leslie (Cody) Peterson of Kersey, Colo., daughter-in-law, Linda Metz of Grand Junction, Colo.; grandsons, Mark Metz of Carpenter, Wyo., Lonnie (Jamie) Metz of Grand Junction, Colo., Marty Watson of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., Cory Leflet of Loveland, Colo.; granddaughters, Heather Metz of Yuma, Colo., Lenora (Garland) Mears of Gunnison, Colo., and Savanna Leflet of Cheyenne, Wyo.; greatgrandchildren, Kyle and Thor Metz, Nirvana Bell, Hunter, Chance and Trey Mears, James Brandner, Aiden and Dominic Martinez, Marcos Leflet, Junior and Julian Serrano; greatgreat-grandchildren, Meeah, Brent and Laylah; her best friend, Barbara Williams of Ft. Collins, Colo., with whom she shared kids, grandkids and great-grandsons; as well as her other family members: Cindy Gordon, Marina Watson, Micky Spence, Sherry Metz, Marilyn Porter, Kathy Kenyon, Brenda Sheppard, Glenda Denniston, Teri Ortiz and Lloyd Leflet; cousins, Irene O'Day, Charolette Prodell, Rosalee Templeton, Bob and Marilyn Slonecker, Henry "Hank" Langston, Ray and Laurie Spiker, Sue O'Day and Tim O'Day, as well as many other family and friends.
A private family service will be held at a later date. As a wife and mother of veterans, Phyllis was proud of her husband and sons' service to this country. In lieu of flowers please send donations to The Honor Guard of Ft. Collins, at the American Legion, 2124 County Rd. 54G, Ft. Collins, Colo., 80524.
