Election Day will soon be here and there is the usual raft of proposals that our citizens will be asked to vote on. One in particular, the request for an increase in property taxes to augment the funding of the Gunnison Valley Housing Authority (GVRHA), has proven controversial. The proponents of the tax state that housing is critically short in the county and “something needs to be done.”

While it is undeniable that there is a shortage of housing, none of the advocates of the tax increase provide a justification for how the higher property tax will help address the housing shortage. It is a case of “give us your money and then we will figure out how to use it.”
