On July 4, Michael Wayne Turner passed away, he was 71 years old. He died peacefully at home after a long struggle with an illness. He was a kind husband and father of three who will be remembered for his sense of humor by those closest to him.
Michael was born in Des Moines, Iowa on Feb. 21, 1948 to Sarah Leota (Weir) and William Dean Turner. Michael was a graduate at Melcher-Dallas High School in 1966 and attended the University of Iowa and later graduated from Killen College of Killeen Texas in 1970 after fighting in Vietnam. During his tour in Vietnam, he was a Gunner for the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970 and was honorably discharged with two medals in 1970.
Michael married Janet Ann Lallier on April 28, 1979. They had two children in Denver, Colo.; Michael II and Sarah. The family then moved to Gunnison in 1987 where they had their last child named Peter. Michael was an optician for many years of his life in various cities including Gunnison. He also spent several years as a fishing guide here in the Gunnison Valley.
Over his lifetime he developed and honed his love for the outdoors through hunting and fishing. Which he passed on much of these experiences to his children through multiple family outings into the regions that he loved so deeply. He also passed on a great passion for sports to his children and enjoyed watching them and following their endeavors in sports.
He is survived by his wife Janet and his three children. A private ceremony will be conducted by his family.
