I am a librarian, and most people have no idea what I do.

At least once a week, someone asks me if I spend my workdays reading books. They also ask me if my entire profession is obsolete because of Google and Amazon.

In short, no and no, respectively. Access to information has grown exponentially since the mid-’90s, but I am not sure we have experienced a commensurate growth in information literacy. This is an important topic and where librarians come into the picture. But let’s leave information literacy for a moment and talk about access to information.
