When it comes to danger of wildfire that could rise as high as a towering spruce tree this year, there’s good news. And there’s bad news.

To start with the good, national forest lands across the Gunnison Basin are still experiencing “low” danger, based on current snowpack and resulting wet conditions. However, Gunnison County Emergency Management issued a statement late last week noting “moderate” danger for low-lying lands — an indication that warm and windy weather has increased potential for fire, and the basin is beginning to creep toward dangerously dry conditions.
