Newspaper people are notoriously poor at helping readers understand how and why we do what we do. This realization has become all too clear amid the onset of “fake news” and, by extension, media in general being treated like a punching bag — giving us reason to help our audience understand our actions, which, frankly, we should have been doing all along.
We’ve discussed ways at the Times to better convey the “story behind the story” to readers. Consider this column just that in the realm of letters to the editor.
