Sitting on the deck of the Lake City Bakery a couple of Fridays ago, enjoying one of Steve Mikeska’s heavenly pastries, I noticed a scar on the flank of a hillside in the vicinity of Roundtop Mountain. It looked like a fresh avalanche slide path.

It’s probably been there for a hundred years, I told myself. You’re just now noticing it because you’re on the look-out for slides after hearing and reading about the epic avalanche season that wreaked so much havoc down in the San Juans this past winter and spring.

At least 19 named snowslides occurred in Hinsdale County this winter, some of them in known chutes and others turning 250-to-300 year old trees into toothpicks.
