June Krizmanich, 93, of Gunnison peacefully passed away at home on July 22, 2019. June was born in Crested Butte to Peter and Lucy Marasco. She attended school in Crested Butte, graduating in 1944. She married John William Krizmanich of Crested Butte on June 28, 1947.
They made their home in Crested Butte just two doors down from her parents and lived there most of her life. John Peter, born in 1951 was their only child.
Because of the war, there was a teacher shortage so June became a temporary teacher after high school, later becoming a homemaker and also working at Stephanie’s General Store for many years where she enjoyed dishing up big scoops of ice cream for customers. She also volunteered at the Crested Butte library and was a lifelong reader. Very active with the Crested Butte Senior Center, the Memorial Day luncheon was a highlight each year. She supported John with the Veterans of Foreign Wars by her activity in the Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, taking new recipes to many potlucks and loved to picnic in the hills above her beloved Crested Butte. She served spaghetti as a side dish, but will be remembered for the many poticas (cheese, apple and nut) she has made over the years especially at Easter and Christmas.
She continued to stay active in the Altar and Rosary Society after moving to Gunnison in 1990 where she also volunteered at the Opp Shop and the Pioneer Museum. She enjoyed traveling, taking numerous cruises and visiting many national parks, Hawaii, Canada, Alaska and Europe.
She even rode a camel by the Great Pyramids of Egypt!
She loved spoiling and spending time with her two granddaughters, dancing the polka, crocheting, daily hikes up Kebler Pass, jeep rides in the mountains, picking wild raspberries in the fall, maintaining a beautiful flower garden and always had a treat for dogs.
June was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, brothers James and Glenn (Mary Jane), her parents and many of the Crested Butte Old Timers.
She is survived by John Peter (Debra) of Howard, granddaughters Kaitlyn of Salida and Emily of Boulder, Goddaughter Stephanie Hansen of California, nephew Joseph Krizmanich of Albuquerque and close friends especially Thelma Reece and Fern White.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum or the Hospice of Gunnison Valley in June’s name.
A mass was held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Gunnison on July 30 followed by a luncheon at the parish hall. A vigil was held the night before. An inurnment in the Crested Butte Cemetery will be held at a later date.
