Mike Kunes passed away in the loving arms of his family at his daughter’s home in Colorado Springs, Colo. Mike was born Sept. 1, 1942 and passed away March 2.
Mike came to Gunnison, Colo., in 1972 after attending Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania and serving his country in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1965.
In July 1972 he married Dawn Hollick from Jersey Shore, Penn., whom he had known growing up in Jersey Shore. Mike and Dawn had two children, Jason Kunes, born in 1973, and Amanda Kunes, born in 1976. During this time Mike earned his B.A. from Western State College, as well as worked towards his master’s degree in business.
Mike was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed all the Gunnison area had to offer in hunting, fishing and golfing. Mike also enjoyed all aspects of sports and could be found on his down time cheering on the Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets, as well as the Colorado Rockies. Of course, he still supported the home state teams back in Pennsylvania.
Mike was well known as the manager of the Safeway store in Gunnison which he served from 1987 to 1999. Because of Mike’s keen business sense, he was able to retire at the age of 55, at which time he and his wife Dawn began spending part of the year in Lake Havasu, Ariz., escaping the winter months of Gunnison. During this time Mike was able to make several close friends, all of which would speak very highly of Mike.
Mike is survived by his loving wife Dawn, his son and daughter-in-law Jason and Danielle Kunes, his daughter and son in-law Amanda and Ron Fry. Mike was also fortunate enough to have 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Mike also leaves behind two sisters, Suzanne Burchill of Longmont, Colo., Cheryl Millard of Jersey Shore, Penn., and a brother James Kunes who resides in Crested Butte, Colo.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be given to the Cancer Society.
