After suffering from cancer, Jay Coates passed away on his 76th birthday, Dec. 19. Jay was the middle child of loving parents Bill and Billie Gail Coates of Downey, Calif. Both are now deceased.
Jay is survived by his former wife, Darlene McKee of Gunnison; Cheri Cooper, his only child, of Glade Park, Colo.; two grandchildren, Dani (Shawn) Liddicoat of Grand Junction, Colo., and Aaron (Jes) Howell of Detroit, Mich.; five great-grandchildren, and one sister, Joan Nichols of Orange County, Calif.
Jay was very proud of his daughter Cheri and all her accomplishments, and they enjoyed many good times together.
Jay was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed his many motorcycles, racing stock cars that he built, golf, skiing, hunting and camping.
After graduating high school, Jay went to work for the city of Downey in California. He built the float for the city and won many awards for it. The float was in the Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., and he drove the float in the parade for many years.
Jay later spent time delivering Holsum Bread and delivering to Idealco Laundry in Gunnison.
Jay’s legacy: “work hard; play harder.” He will be greatly missed in all our lives but always in our hearts.
