Gwendolyn Lee (Watson) Wood passed away Aug. 17. She was born Oct. 6, 1946 to Carley and Woodrow (Buster) Watson.

Lee, as all of us knew her, grew up on the family ranch near Doyleville. Lee and two of her siblings started school at the Doyleville School House. Lee graduated from Gunnison High School. She graduated from Western State College with a teaching degree. She married Herbert Gifford and to that union a son, Stephen, was born.

For health reasons Lee moved to Florida for warmer weather. There she went on to get her master’s degree in library science. She worked as a librarian at the elementary school in St. Petersburg for many years. She remarried for a brief time.

When her mother’s health started failing Lee came back and forth from Florida to Colorado to help with the care of her mother until her mother’s passing, at which time Lee returned to Florida and continued to work for the school at New Port Richey, until she retired and moved to Montrose, Colo., to be near her family here.

Lee is survived by her son Stephen Gifford; two sisters, Gail Torrence (Rick) of Peyton, Colo., Linda Watson of Eckert, Colo. and sister-in law Juanita Watson of Riverton, Wyo.; eight nephews and one niece; other great nieces and nephews, one of whom she was very close to, Xander Kreuger. Lee was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Pauline and Janet, and two brothers, Joe and Woody.

Graveside services will be held Sept. 5 at 10 a.m. at the Gunnison Cemetery. Donation can be made in her name to the Welcome Home Alliance for Veterans, #4 Hillcrest Plaza Way, Montrose, CO 81401.
