A controversial Verizon Wireless cell phone tower constructed adjacent to the Gunnison High School football field is now receiving power. The company confirmed to Gunnison Watershed RE1J School District Superintendent Leslie Nichols that the tower went live on Sept. 4.
But already the radio frequency (RF) in the area surrounding the facility has caused alarm.
Nearby resident Roanne Houck — who raised concerns about the tower during its construction — said she monitored her home for RF readings prior to the tower being turned on, which registered in the “green zone.” Now her readings are much higher — and in the “red zone.”
