GHS Track and Field — Age and experience don’t always translate to success.

Melita Ferchau proved as much in her debut at state this past weekend. The Gunnison High School (GHS) freshman took the discus field by surprise — beating out 13 upperclassmen and recording a personal best mark of 117.5 meters — en route to earning second place. That was despite Ferchau entering the event ranked No. 7.

The weather was harsh — but nothing the GHS track and field team couldn’t handle at the Colorado 3A track and field state championships. As a whole, the boys finished seventh, while the girls finished 29th.
