Smith, O’Neill raise $18K for Six Points in Grand Traverse

Winning can be measured many ways, but not often does a finish of seventh place result in undeniable victory such as that surrounding two athletes in this year’s Grand Traverse.

The 40-mile, midnight ski race from Crested Butte to Aspen saw two longtime competitors join forces this year to raise money for Six Points Evaluation and Training. By early this week, the team had raised more than $18,000 — three times the duo’s initial goal.

For Pat O’Neill, a Crested Butte school teacher, and Gunnison’s Brian Smith, a longtime Six Points employee, the feat was sweeter than crossing the finish line first — which both athlete has done multiple times in the Grand Traverse.
