After more than two years of deliberation, countless long, drawn-out meetings and skyhigh emotion, it appears that a controversial affordable housing proposal south of Crested Butte has met its doom.

If County Commissioners stick to their previously imposed deadline for northvalley partners to approve the project proceeding, then The Corner at Brush Creek is effectively no more. On Monday, Crested Butte Town Council opted to simply not vote on the matter — recognizing fully that in doing so, developer Gatesco wouldn’t receive the majority support needed to take the next step in Brush Creek’s land-use review process.

We admit there’s a little relief in the fact that this longstanding community bellyache appears to have gone by the wayside. But to think that a big answer for a bigger problem has become an utter waste of time is disheartening.
