Economic development is a notoriously tricky pursuit. One person’s preferred approach may vary drastically for another.

But we think City of Gunnison leaders are onto something in questioning how the ICELab at Western Colorado University is measuring success. Perhaps just as important as a means of gauging such progress are clearly defined targets.

Of course, the underlying objective of the ICELab is more and higher paying jobs in the Gunnison Valley. Yet, the establishment of concrete goals in the short-term — clearly communicated to the public — would be of benefit.
